It started with a single question: "Why does the turmeric from our grandmother's village taste so different from what's sold in stores?"
Growing up in Guwahati, we were surrounded by the extraordinary — Lakadong turmeric from the Meghalaya hills with curcumin levels that scientists write papers about, Bhoot Jolokia chillies so fierce they were once weaponised, and black rice from Manipur that emperors once guarded with their lives.
Yet none of it reached the world. The farmers who grew these treasures sold them for almost nothing at local mandis, while the world paid premium prices for inferior alternatives from other regions.
